2025 Sir Albert Coates Oration
19 Nov 2025 6:00 PM - 19 Nov 2025 8:00 PM
Mt Helen - Building C - Geoffrey Blainey Auditorium
Federation University Australia, in collaboration with the Albert Coates Memorial Trust, is pleased to welcome guest orator Richard de Crespigny AM with his keynote address: Resilience - From Cradle to the Grave.
Richard was pilot-in-command of Qantas Flighty 32 (2010) when one engine of the Airbus exploded shortly after taking off from Singapore. Despite the failure causing severe damage to the aircraft, including punctured fuel tanks, the crew landed the plane at Changi Airport in Singapore without injury or loss of life. Passengers, the media, and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau praised de Crespigny for his handling of the emergency, and in 2026 he was awarded the Order of Australia for his contributions to aviation safety. Richard has authored two books QF32, detailing the flight and its aftermath and FLY!
Guests are to be seated at 5:45 pm for a 6:00 pm start.
